How to Properly Store Your PPE

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is only effective if it's maintained properly — and storage plays a critical role. Poorly stored safety gear can degrade faster, lose compliance, and even pose risks to workers who assume it's in good condition.

Here’s how to store your PPE correctly to protect both your investment and your workforce.

1. Keep PPE Clean and Dry

Moisture is the enemy of most PPE — especially fabrics, gloves, respirators, and electrical-rated gear.

Storage Tips:

  • Store in a dry, ventilated area

  • Avoid damp basements, bathrooms, or near cleaning supplies

  • Wipe gear clean before storage to avoid mold, rust, or residue buildup

2. Use Dedicated PPE Storage Areas

Designate an area specifically for PPE — not shared with tools, chemicals, or personal items.

Why it matters:

  • Reduces cross-contamination

  • Keeps equipment organized and easy to inspect

  • Prevents mechanical damage from sharp or heavy objects

Consider installing:

  • Lockers or cubbies for individual gear

  • Hanging hooks for coveralls and harnesses

  • Drawer bins for gloves, glasses, and masks

3. Avoid Direct Sunlight and UV Exposure

UV rays can break down hard hats, vests, and reflective gear over time, especially in regions with intense sun like the UAE.

Best practice: Store PPE away from windows, vehicle dashboards, or outdoor sheds. UV-protected storage cabinets are ideal for long-term use.

4. Label and Rotate Gear

If you store extra inventory or bulk PPE, use a first-in, first-out (FIFO) system to prevent older stock from expiring on the shelf.

Suggestions:

  • Label bins or boxes by month/year

  • Use transparent containers for easy visibility

  • Schedule periodic checks to monitor expiry dates

5. Store Respiratory Gear Separately

Masks and respirators require specific care:

  • Keep filters in sealed packaging until use

  • Store half- and full-face masks in hard cases to prevent deformation

  • Avoid storing respirators near chemicals or solvents that can degrade the rubber

6. Don’t Mix Used and New Equipment

Separate clean, unused PPE from items that have been worn but not yet cleaned or inspected. This is especially important for reusable gear like:

  • Fall protection harnesses

  • Gloves

  • Helmets and face shields
